Residents and commuters on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, should prepare for possible travel delays as a new weather forecast predicts rain and choppy water between March 3 and March 6, 2026. A shift in local weather patterns is expected to bring repeated rain and southerly winds that could impact travel for those moving between the islands and the mainland.
According to The Weather Network, there is a 60 per cent chance of rain on March 3, March 5, and March 6, 2026. While rainfall is expected to be light to moderate at 1 to 10 millimetres, the accompanying southerly winds are likely to make local waters rough and difficult to navigate.
The wind and rain could affect travel for those using BC Ferries at the Fulford Harbour, Vesuvius Bay, and Long Harbour terminals. Southerly winds specifically make it harder for ships like the Skeena Queen to dock at the Fulford Harbour terminal on the south end of the island and can slow down its travel times as it moves through the Moresby Passage. Meanwhile, the Quinitsa, which serves the Vesuvius Bay to Crofton route, may also face delays due to the choppy conditions in the Stuart Channel.
Travelers and recreational boaters are encouraged to check the federal marine forecast for the Strait of Georgia provided by Environment and Climate Change Canada. Harbour operators and commuters should also check for official service notices before heading to the terminals, as conditions in the strait can change quickly during rain events.
High winds in the region frequently lead to cancelled trips, especially when gusts reach 100 kilometres per hour. Even with lighter winds, the combination of rain and waves can reduce visibility and create challenging conditions for smaller boats and ferry crews throughout the week.
