Students from Kindergarten to Grade 7 at Salt Spring Elementary School on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, recently took part in a community clean-up to help improve their local environment.
The project, which was featured on the School District 64 (Gulf Islands) website on May 11, 2026, saw children collecting various types of waste from areas within walking distance of the school at 112 Rainbow Road. The students removed items including discarded tires, styrofoam, and plastic.
A key part of the day was the use of a buddy system, where older students acted as mentors for younger ones. This collaboration helped students work together across grade levels while focusing on teamwork and environmental care.
The clean-up provided a hands-on learning experience that allowed students to see the impact of waste firsthand, as described in the school district feature. The initiative encouraged the children to reflect on how their daily choices affect the environment and how they can live more sustainably.
The event was designed to support the provincial curriculum’s core competencies, such as social responsibility, communication, and critical thinking. By taking part in the clean-up, students aimed to contribute to the well-being of their community and gain a better understanding of environmental stewardship.
