Property owners on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, can now share their thoughts on fire safety and water protection through a new 10-minute survey. The initiative is a joint effort by Transition Salt Spring, the Salt Spring Island Water Preservation Society, and the Climate Adaptation Research Lab.

Residents who complete the survey by early 2026 will be entered into a draw to win a $250 prize. The questions focus on what homeowners are already doing or considering to lower wildfire risks and protect local drinking water.

Local organizers say the feedback will help them decide which programs, rebates, and hands-on supports to offer residents in the future. This information helps ensure that new services meet the actual needs of people living on the island.

Research from the Climate Adaptation Research Lab shows that the island’s forests are vulnerable to fire because of past logging and changes in how water moves through the land. Protecting the Maxwell Creek area is a top priority, as a major fire there could threaten the island’s main supply of fresh drinking water.

The survey also asks how residents are caring for local trees and plants. By gathering this data, the groups hope to better protect the island from the combined threats of long dry spells and potential forest fires.
