Residents in Sandy Bay, Manitoba, are facing a dangerous risk of frostbite today, February 25, 2026, as temperatures and wind chill values have dropped significantly below normal. According to Environment Canada, observations taken early this morning showed an outdoor temperature of -24.9°C and a wind chill of -31°C.

The weather agency warns that at these levels, frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10 to 30 minutes. The forecast for the rest of the day includes a 60 percent chance of flurries and winds reaching up to 15 kilometres per hour.

The extreme cold is a major concern for the more than 2,500 people living on the Sandy Bay First Nation reserve. Residents are encouraged to limit their time outdoors, secure pets and livestock, and check on neighbours who may be at risk from the cold.

Travel along Provincial Highway 50 might be difficult due to the low temperatures and potential for snow. Data from the Oak Point Marine station confirms that these conditions are nearly 20 degrees colder than the typical weather for late February.
