Families and visitors in Sandy Bay, Manitoba, can enjoy ice fishing without buying a licence from February 14 to February 16, 2026. This province-wide event, organized by the Manitoba government, aims to make it easier for people to try the sport for the first time.
Along with the free fishing days, vehicle permits are not required for any provincial parks until April 30, 2026. This allows residents of Sandy Bay First Nation and nearby areas to access local outdoor spots on Lake Manitoba and beyond at no cost.
While the usual fees are gone, all other fishing rules remain in place to protect local fish like walleye and northern pike. Anglers must still follow limits on how many fish they can keep and must clean, drain, and dry their gear to stop the spread of invasive species.
Natural Resources and Indigenous Futures Minister Ian Bushie is reminding everyone to stay safe while out on the ice. He recommends that people check the thickness of the ice before walking or driving on it and tell someone their plans before they head out.
