A heat warning is in effect for Sandy Bay, Manitoba, as Environment Canada forecasts daytime humidex values reaching 38 through the next few days. The warning, issued early Tuesday, July 28, 2026, covers the entire Rural Municipality of Alonsa, including the Ebb and Flow Reserve and Sandy Bay Reserve.
Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be the hottest days, with highs of 31 degrees Celsius and humidex values reaching 39. There is also a risk of thunderstorms. Overnight lows will stay in the mid to upper teens, offering little relief from the heat. A drier, sunny weekend is on the way, with highs around 29 degrees on August 1 and 2.
The heat is part of a larger weather system affecting much of central Canada. Environment Canada says a massive area of high pressure centred in the United States is driving the extreme conditions.
Extreme heat is the deadliest natural disaster in Canada, killing more people than any other weather event. Those at greatest risk include older adults, infants, people with chronic illnesses, outdoor workers, and anyone without access to air conditioning. A 2023 Statistics Canada study found that less than half of Prairie residents have air conditioning, compared to the national average of 61 per cent.
Residents are urged to drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and check on older adults or vulnerable neighbours. Watch for signs of heat exhaustion, such as dizziness, nausea, and headache.
