The Lambton County Library is hosting a community event at the Sarnia Library Theatre in Sarnia, Ontario, to kick off the local gardening season. On Saturday, March 28, 2026, from 12:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., the library will reveal this year’s “One Seed” variety, which is a single plant species that the entire community is encouraged to grow together.
Attendees will be the first to learn which vegetable or herb has been chosen for 2026, following previous selections like the Cherokee Purple Tomato in 2025 and Dark Green Zucchini in 2024. The afternoon will also include guest speakers and a screening of the documentary film, “The Biggest Little Farm,” to help inspire local growers.
To help residents start their own gardens, the library provides free packets of the selected seed variety at all 25 branch locations while supplies last. This program is designed to make it easier for families and first-time gardeners to grow their own food and learn about nature.
More gardening events are planned after the launch, including a workshop at the Petrolia Library on March 31, 2026. Gardeners can also attend a question and answer session with Taproots Green Gardens at the Sarnia Library on April 2, 2026, to get expert advice for the spring planting season.
