The Sarnia Police Service is asking for the public’s help identifying suspects after a series of air conditioner vandalism and wiring thefts in downtown Sarnia caused over $30,000 in damage. The incidents happened in the area between Davis Street and George Street, from Front Street to Vidal Street.
Police have released images of persons of interest and are urging anyone with information to come forward. On August 26, 2026, between 4:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., officers responded to three separate reports of damaged air conditioning units where copper wiring had been removed. Surveillance footage captured two individuals involved in at least one of the incidents, with one suspect appearing to act as a lookout. Police believe all three incidents are connected.
Businesses in the downtown area are encouraged to take steps to protect their air conditioning units. Police recommend ensuring the area around AC units is well lit, security cameras are in place and working, and signage indicates the area is under video surveillance. These small steps can act as a deterrent and help with the investigation if damage occurs.

Copper theft has been rising across Ontario as demand from data centre construction and electric vehicle production drives up scrap metal prices. Bell Canada alone has reported a 78 per cent increase in thefts so far in 2026 compared with the same period last year.
