Thousands of people from across the Sarnia-Lambton community gathered at the Cestar Group Athletics and Fitness Complex on April 2, 2026, for the 31st annual Lambton College Pow Wow. The event, which serves as a significant celebration of Indigenous culture, featured dance demonstrations, traditional food, and music, organized by the college’s Indigenous Student Council and Indigenous Student Centre.

The celebration drew attention for its role in fostering connections during a time of local tension. Following controversial comments made in March 2026 by Sarnia City Councillor Bill Dennis regarding an Indigenous mural at City Hall, organizers and participants highlighted the importance of the gathering as a move toward reconciliation. Gordan Bressette, the event’s head dancer, described the day as a step forward for the community despite those recent events.

The Sarnia Police Service also attended the event and shared photos of their participation. The police have been working to build trust with local Indigenous communities, a process that includes the 2023 appointment of Constable Tyler Callander as a dedicated community officer for the nearby Aamjiwnaang First Nation. Aamjiwnaang First Nation has historically been led by Chief Chris Plain, and community leaders have noted that while the relationship between the police and the community is improving, building lasting trust requires ongoing time and dedication.

The annual event has grown significantly since its start as a small student gathering in the 1990s, with interest increasing steadily following the 2015 report from Canada‘s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Lambton College, which typically enrolls between 200 and 250 Indigenous students annually, uses the event to teach both the surrounding community and students about Indigenous culture in an open and friendly environment, according to Sierra Cottrelle, president of the Indigenous Student Council.
