Algoma University closed its Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, campus and cancelled all in-person classes on Monday, March 16, 2026, because of a major winter storm. The school shared the news on March 15, 2026, to give students and staff enough time to stay home and stay safe.
The storm brought heavy snow and very low visibility to much of Northeastern Ontario. Environment Canada issued warnings about the storm, which created hazardous driving conditions for anyone trying to get to the campus.
Other local schools also decided to close because of the weather. Sault College shut its doors on March 16, 2026, as the winter weather hit the area.
University officials chose to shut down the campus to keep people off the roads during the worst part of the storm. The school prioritized the safety of its community while travel remained difficult across the city.
