Sault Ste. Marie and St. Joseph Island are facing hazardous travel conditions this morning, February 14, 2026, due to a freezing fog advisory. The weather event has caused low visibility across the region and is expected to last until later today.
Environment Canada issued the alert at 6:11 AM, warning that visibility has dropped to nearly zero in some areas. The Sault Ste. Marie Airport reported visibility of only 0.6 kilometres as the fog moved through the region early Saturday morning.
The advisory is expected to remain in place until late this morning when the fog is predicted to clear. Drivers on Highway 17 and the Bernt Gilbertson Bridge, as well as those using the Sugar Island Ferry, should allow for extra travel time because of the conditions.
Because this is freezing fog, it can also create a slippery glaze on roads and bridges. Officials recommend that drivers turn on their full vehicle lights, slow down, and maintain a safe following distance from other cars until the weather improves.
