Frontenac Street in Sault Ste. Marie has reopened to traffic following a temporary closure caused by flooding. The road, which had been closed between the entrance to the Northland Trailer Park and Tecumseh Street since April 15, 2026, was cleared for travel on the morning of April 16 after municipal crews worked through the night to assess conditions and ensure safety.
The flooding was driven by a combination of heavy rainfall and rapid snowmelt. According to data from Environment Canada, the region recently saw between 20 and 40 mm of rain. This moisture, paired with daytime temperatures reaching up to 16 degrees Celsius, caused significant runoff from an above-average snowpack that still holds 50 to 75 cm of snow in the district.
While this specific section of roadway is now open, a provincial flood warning remains in effect for the Sault Ste. Marie and Blind River District. The Ministry of Natural Resources has advised that this warning will continue until noon on Tuesday, April 21, 2026. Further precipitation of 15 to 20 mm is expected between Friday night and Saturday, which may keep flood risks elevated.
The City of Sault Ste. Marie is reminding residents to exercise caution while travelling. Officials emphasized that drivers should never attempt to drive through flooded roadways, as water levels and road conditions can be unpredictable.
The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions across the area as the spring melt progresses.
