A new local group is helping Sault Ste. Marie families get through the winter by offering free food and household supplies through a community bartering program. The Algoma Community Pantry and Bartering Foundation is running a multi-week giveaway at its building at 281 North St. from January 11 to January 29, with distribution and pickup announcements beginning January 30.
Residents can find dry food, clothing and essential household items, including small appliances and bedding. Instead of paying with money, people who cannot afford a donation are invited to trade their time or skills—such as cleaning, gardening or basic repairs—in exchange for goods.
Founder Wendy Gutcher started the group to provide direct help to neighbours without the pricing model of traditional thrift stores. The pantry accepts donations of non-perishable food, hygiene products and gently used household goods at the former Wood Wyant cleaning supplies storefront during its regular intake hours (Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.).
Following the intake/registration window, the foundation will begin distribution and announce pickup times for families beginning January 30; the organization uses its Facebook group as a primary hub for distribution updates. The program aims to support residents struggling with the rising cost of living while encouraging community members to contribute their skills and time.
