The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is inviting residents to help shape local policing by applying for a new advisory committee. The service announced on May 12, 2026, that it is forming the Chief’s Community Advisory Committee to create a regular forum for public input on police priorities and community concerns.
The committee is designed to build trust and collaboration between the public and the local force. While members will provide valuable perspectives to leadership, the group will not oversee police operations, review individual complaints, or replace official oversight bodies. Members will serve in a voluntary capacity for up to two years and are expected to attend at least four meetings annually.
Chief Brent Duguay is looking for a wide range of voices to join the initiative. The police service is specifically encouraging applications from youth between the ages of 18 and 25, seniors, newcomers, Indigenous community members, and individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. They are also seeking those with lived experience regarding mental health, addictions, homelessness, or disability to ensure the committee reflects the needs of the community.
To be eligible, applicants must be at least 18 years old and reside in or have strong ties to Sault Ste. Marie or Prince Township. The selection process includes a mandatory criminal record check. Interested residents can submit their applications through the official police website until 3:00 p.m. on June 9, 2026.
