Two teenage brothers from Sault Ste. Marie remain in hospital after being struck by an SUV while walking to school on March 27, 2026. The collision happened around 8:10 a.m. on Second Line West near Whitney Avenue, prompting an ongoing investigation by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.
The victims, 14-year-old Ben Shubrook-Hill and 16-year-old Nathan Shubrook-Hill, were on their way to Korah Collegiate and Vocational School when they were hit by a black SUV. Both boys sustained serious injuries and were transported to a local hospital before being flown to London, Ontario, for further surgical care. According to family reports, Ben Shubrook-Hill required surgery to place pins in his leg and back, and he also sustained a broken arm. His older brother, Nathan, remains in more serious condition.
A spokesperson for the police, Chelsey Foucher, confirmed that the section of Second Line West where the incident occurred lacks sidewalks, which forces pedestrians to walk on the edge of the roadway. The area was closed to traffic between Brookfield Avenue and Arden Street for nearly three hours while investigators processed the scene.
The Traffic Services unit, led by Constable Spencer Guild, is currently investigating the circumstances of the collision. As of March 28, 2026, no charges have been laid. Police are asking any witnesses or individuals who may have dashcam or surveillance footage of the area at the time of the incident to contact Constable Guild at 705-949-6300 extension 383.
The brothers are being supported by their grandmother and legal guardian, Gina Shubrook. A fundraising campaign has been established to assist the family with transportation and long-term care costs as the brothers recover from their injuries.
