Police in Selkirk, Manitoba, seized five firearms during a search of a residence on Vaughan Avenue on May 8, 2026. Members of the RCMP arrested four individuals at the scene without incident, though all were later released without charge as the investigation remains active.
The weapons recovered during the operation included a prohibited .22 calibre revolver, a semi-automatic tactical-style rifle equipped with three prohibited magazines, a semi-automatic SKS rifle, and a lever-action rifle. Officers also discovered various types of ammunition on the property.
According to the police, all the firearms were stored unsafely and were readily accessible. The operation was led by the Selkirk General Investigative Section with support from the Selkirk Detachment, the Manitoba East District Crime Reduction Enforcement Team, and the Emergency Response Team.
This intervention comes amid broader concerns regarding firearm-related violence. According to Statistics Canada, the national rate of firearm-related violent crime in 2024 remained 44 per cent higher than it was a decade ago, despite a recent yearly decrease. Local data from 2020 shows that crime rates in Selkirk were 115 per cent higher than the national average, with violent crime rates reaching 140 per cent above that same benchmark.
