The Environment Canada forecast issued August 5 calls for a mix of sun and cloud through Thursday, sunny skies Friday and Saturday, then a 60 per cent chance of showers Sunday as temperatures stay warm but clouds roll in.
Wednesday afternoon’s high is expected to reach 25°C, with a UV index of 6, which is classified as high, so residents are reminded to use sun protection if heading outdoors. Thursday will be slightly cooler with a high of 20°C and continued sun and cloud, while Friday and Saturday both bring mainly sunny conditions and highs of 24°C and 25°C respectively. By Sunday, cloud cover builds in and the chance of showers arrives, though temperatures will still reach a comfortable 22°C.
Air quality remains good across Strathcona County. The The Weather Network and Environment Canada both show an Air Quality Health Index reading of 3 – low risk – as of Wednesday afternoon. The forecast calls for continued low risk levels through Thursday night, meaning conditions are ideal for outdoor activities for both the general public and those with health concerns.
This run of fine weather follows an exceptionally wet early summer for the region. The Edmonton area recorded its wettest summer on record, with 511 mm of rain between June 1 and July 26, topping the previous record of 417 mm set in 1953, according to The Weather Network. That heavy rainfall triggered flooding in parts of Sherwood Park, including Jubilee Landing trailer park, and washed out Township Road 534 along Oldman Creek, one of more than two dozen road closures in the county. That road is not expected to reopen for months.
While wildfire smoke from northern Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories blanketed much of Alberta on June 30, current readings show no such impacts for Sherwood Park this week. With the air quality low risk, residents can comfortably enjoy the sunny days before weekend clouds and possible showers move in.
