The Rotary Club of Slave Lake Public Library will close for building maintenance from July 25 to August 9, 2026. Any late fees that build up during the closure will be waived, and the library will reopen on August 10 with new hours.
“The Library will be closed for building maintenance from July 25th to August 9th,” an announcement on the library’s website states. “Any late fees incurred during this time will be waived. We will re-open on August 10th Monday to Friday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.”
The two-week shutdown comes as the library is already dealing with budget cuts from the Town of Slave Lake. Those cuts have forced the library to close on evenings and weekends until September 2026 and to cancel or reduce several community programs. Library Manager Kendra McRee recently told the M.D. of Lesser Slave River council that the book club, writers’ group, knitting circle, ESL Café, and other programs have been affected, and all part-time employees and security staff have been laid off.
The library serves about 5,000 residents from Slave Lake and surrounding communities including Smith, Flatbush, and the Sawridge First Nation. It is located in the Slave Lake Government Centre at 50 Main Street SW. Patrons with items due during the closure do not need to worry about late fees, as the library has confirmed all charges during that period will be erased.
When the doors open again on August 10, the library will operate Monday to Friday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, with no evening or weekend hours for the time being. Residents can find updates on the closure and hours at the library’s website.
