Some residents in Smiths Falls, Ontario, are calling for Councillor Paula Banks to step down after a localized online poll in a community social media group highlighted frustration with the town’s leadership. The discussion follows a recent period of tension for the municipal government that included the suspension of two councillors earlier this month.

The non‑binding online poll in the community group recorded 77 of 313 respondents — about 24.6% — saying they wanted Banks to resign. The poll was not an official government vote and represents a minority of participants.

On Jan. 14, 2026, Councillors Jay Brennan and Stephen Robinson were found to have breached the town’s Code of Conduct and were suspended from council and committee meetings — Brennan for 45 days with pay and Robinson for 15 days with pay. Mayor Shawn Pankow said the council had “had a thorough and respectful discussion on this matter… and are now prepared to move forward by continuing to serve the community.” (Town media release reported by The Lanarkist.)

Paula Banks previously served on Rideau Lakes Township council (including a period carrying deputy mayoral duties). While serving in Rideau Lakes, she was involved in a high‑profile dispute over whether her pay should be suspended following an Integrity Commissioner report — a matter reported by Inside Ottawa Valley and other local outlets.

As of Jan. 25, 2026, the reviewed public reports do not show any formal paperwork filed with the town clerk to remove Banks from office; the matter remains a topic of local discussion. The poll results, though limited in size, have been amplified by residents and advocates who say they want a “fresh start” for municipal government.
