The City of Spruce Grove, Alberta, is looking for artists to design and paint a new mural at its main recreation and culture building. On March 9, 2026, the city invited creators to submit their ideas for the public art project at Heavy Metal Place.
The initiative aims to make the facility more welcoming for the athletes and families who use the space every day. Heavy Metal Place opened on May 10, 2025, and includes ice rinks, a library, and a theatre.
According to the City of Spruce Grove, this project will help blend sports and culture in the community hub. The city is working with the Allied Arts Council of Spruce Grove, which already operates a gallery within the centre.
This new artwork will be located in a high-traffic area to improve the look and feel of the sports facility for local residents. The city is focusing on adding more local art to its modern public buildings and community spaces.
