Residents in Spruce Grove, Alberta, can now visit a local business to sign a formal petition calling for a province-wide vote on Alberta’s independence from Canada. The signing location is open at The Original Swamp Donkey, situated at 15C Alberta Avenue, where citizens can add their names in person until April 15, 2026.
The effort is organized by Stay Free Alberta and follows a process approved by Elections Alberta in late 2025. To be successful, organizers must collect about 177,000 signatures from across the province within a 120-day window that ends in early May. This total represents 10 per cent of the total votes cast in the 2023 provincial election.
Those interested in signing can visit the Spruce Grove shop Monday through Saturday between 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. According to provincial rules for public petitions, all signatures must be written by hand on official paper forms and witnessed on-site, as digital or online signatures are not accepted for this type of request.
This local signing hub is part of a larger movement to use the provincial Citizen’s Initiative Act, which is a law that gives residents a way to propose major changes to the government. If enough signatures are gathered and verified, it could lead to a formal referendum on the province’s future relationship with the rest of the country.
