The City of Spruce Grove, Alberta, is looking at a plan to make driving through town faster by upgrading traffic lights with new technology. During budget meetings in March and April 2026, the city council will decide whether to fund a program that adjusts signal timing based on real-time traffic flow.
If approved, the city would install technology from a provider called NoTraffic at 12 intersections along Highway 16A and Jennifer Heil Way. This system uses sensors to detect vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians to change lights instantly rather than using a set timer.
This proposal follows a test project in 2025 at the intersections of Jennifer Heil Way at Grove Drive and Hawthorne Gate. Local leaders are also looking to negotiate a separate test for the intersection of Highway 16A and Century Road to better manage traffic when trains are passing.
The project would be paid for using the city’s savings, known as capital reserves, which means it would not require an immediate increase in taxes. While the goal is to reduce daily delays for drivers and bus riders, residents may see some minor construction or lane closures while the equipment is being installed later this year.
