Residents of St. Theresa Point are preparing for a significant drop in temperatures this week, as a cold snap is expected to hit the region starting Sunday, April 5.
According to Environment Canada, the community will see temperatures fall sharply from a mild high of 4°C on Saturday to a low of -21°C by Sunday night. This shift marks one of the coldest nights of the season for the community, which is located on the west shore of Island Lake in northern Manitoba.
The weather forecast includes periods of snow throughout Sunday, with a continued chance of flurries into early next week. With the risk of extreme cold, Manitoba Health advises everyone to take precautions. Residents are encouraged to dress in layers if they must go outside and to watch for signs of frostbite or hypothermia, such as numbness, weakness, shortness of breath, or discoloured fingers and toes.
Health officials also recommend that community members check on vulnerable neighbors, including children and the elderly. As the community continues to navigate housing and infrastructure challenges, residents are encouraged to ensure their heating systems are functioning properly during the cold spell.
Travelers should remain cautious, as icy or snow-covered conditions may impact local roads and walkways. Access to the community is primarily through air travel or winter ice roads, and sudden weather changes can affect transportation routes throughout the region.
