Residents of St. Theresa Point, Manitoba, are facing a dangerous combination of extreme cold and incoming snow starting February 26, 2026. According to Environment Canada, the temperature dropped to -30°C this morning with wind chills reaching -38°C. These conditions create an immediate risk of frostbite for anyone with exposed skin.
A total of 10 centimetres of snow is expected to fall between Thursday night and Friday afternoon. This deep freeze is forecast to continue through early March, with temperatures expected to drop as low as -34°C on Friday night.
The snow and cold may impact operations at the Island Lake Airport, which serves as a vital year-round link for travel and supplies. These conditions also make travel difficult on the winter roads that are currently used to bring in fuel and building materials to the community.
This severe weather follows a December 5, 2025, ruling from the Federal Court that confirmed the government has a duty to provide adequate housing for the community. Many residents currently live in overcrowded homes that are difficult to heat safely during extreme cold events.
Emergency services and local officials are monitoring the power grid as heating demands increase across the community. Residents are encouraged to stay indoors and watch for signs of cold-related health issues until the temperatures begin to rise.
