The Frontier School Division has notified families and staff in St. Theresa Point to prepare for potential regional staffing and resource changes following a fire that destroyed Berens River School on January 27, 2026. This announcement follows a formal notice from division leadership regarding the total loss of the Berens River facility, which served approximately 390 students in the neighbouring community.

According to a letter from Chairperson Linda Ballantyne and Chief Superintendent Tyson MacGillivray, the school is a complete loss. The division is now working on short-term plans to maintain education for Berens River students, including the possible use of portable classrooms and community halls within that community for younger students.

Grade 9 students from Berens River have been offered temporary spots at Frontier Collegiate in Cranberry Portage to ensure they can continue their education. For students from Nursery to Grade 8, officials are currently sourcing temporary buildings and local spaces in Berens River to restore instruction as quickly as possible.

Families and staff at St. Theresa Point High School, home of the Thunderbirds, are encouraged to monitor upcoming notices as the Frontier School Division may reassign staff or coordinate regional resources to support the displaced students. The Board of Trustees is managing these supports across its northern network to minimize learning disruptions throughout the “Frontier Family” of schools.
