Snow and High Winds May Slow Travel in St. Thomas

St. Thomas, Ontario, is preparing for a winter storm on January 21, 2026, forecast to bring 5–10 centimetres of snow with southwest wind gusts up to about 60 km/h. Meteorologists warn the combination of fresh snow and strong winds could reduce visibility and make driving difficult on local and rural roads.

The city is monitoring conditions and may declare a “Significant Weather Event” under its winter maintenance policy if the storm threatens the municipality’s ability to meet Minimum Maintenance Standards. That declaration suspends the standard maintenance timelines and notifies the public that it may take longer than usual to clear secondary streets; the city may also enforce parking restrictions or towing under existing by-laws during major snow events to allow curb-to-curb plowing. According to the City of St. Thomas’ Winter Maintenance information, the municipality is responsible for roughly 484 lane kilometres of streets (and about 202 kilometres of sidewalks).

Commuters should watch for localized “whiteout” conditions where strong southwest winds can blow snow across open roads — rural stretches such as Highbury Avenue and Sunset Drive are especially vulnerable. Parents and students should check Student Transportation Services (mybigyellowbus.ca) for any bus delays or cancellations. Residents can track plowing progress on the City of St. Thomas’ current snow plow status page.

Environment Canada forecasts also indicate dangerous wind chills, so officials are urging residents to use caution and limit travel where possible. For people who need shelter or a warm place during the storm, The INN (Inn Out of the Cold St. Thomas-Elgin) at 10 Princess Ave provides emergency shelter services; the facility lists a capacity of about 40 beds and 15 warming/overflow spaces.

For the latest official updates, consult Environment Canada, The Weather Network, the City of St. Thomas winter maintenance page, and Student Transportation Services before travelling.
