Blowing Snow Makes Driving Difficult in Steinbach

Drivers in Steinbach, Manitoba, should prepare for dangerous road conditions this afternoon as strong winds and blowing snow are expected to reduce visibility across the region. Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a 5:00 a.m. forecast saying winds gusting up to 50 km/h could produce near‑zero visibility or whiteout conditions on open highways and rural roads.

These gusts are expected to pick up loose surface snow, making it hard to see on busy routes such as Highway 12 and Highway 52. The extreme cold and wind chill can also bring a risk of frostbite within minutes, making it dangerous for anyone who might get stuck or stranded in their vehicle if they are not dressed for the weather.

Local authorities, including the Steinbach RCMP, are urging residents to avoid non‑essential travel until conditions improve this evening. Road crews from the R.M. of Hanover Public Works are monitoring the situation, but officials warn that blowing snow can quickly cover roads again even shortly after they have been plowed.

Motorists who must head out are encouraged to check the Manitoba 511 website for real‑time updates on road closures and highway conditions. It is recommended to keep a winter safety kit in your car and to leave extra space between vehicles if you encounter drifting snow on the road.
