Statistics Canada is hiring local residents in Steinbach, Manitoba, to work as census enumerators for the 2026 Census of Population. Statistics Canada released its official staffing announcement on Jan. 6, 2026, and a local Job Bank listing for Steinbach appeared on Jan. 8, 2026; enumerators are listed at $25.87 per hour for these short-term, field-based roles that focus on visiting households in person to collect information.
According to Statistics Canada’s hiring announcement, the federal agency is recruiting for approximately 32,000 positions nationwide to support field collection between March and July 2026. While many residents will complete the census online, enumerators will follow up in person with households that do not respond to help ensure a complete count. Supervisory roles, known as crew leaders, are also being recruited and are paid $31.32 per hour.
An accurate population count is important for Steinbach because census data inform the allocation of provincial and federal transfer payments and program funding for services such as schools, health care and local infrastructure. Historical census data show Steinbach has been one of the fastest-growing communities in Manitoba, which underscores the importance of reaching all households during the door-to-door phase.
Local residents who want to apply can find information on the government’s Census jobs portal. To be eligible, applicants must have reached the age of majority in their province or territory, be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or hold a valid work permit, and obtain a reliability-status security screening (which includes a name-based criminal record check and a credit check). Non-supervisory positions are typically part time (about 20–40 hours per week) and most field collection runs through July 2026. Mandatory training is paid for all new hires before they begin visiting homes in Steinbach and the surrounding area.
