On Feb. 5, 2026, Nova Scotia’s provincial government announced a $1.5 million funding package under the Nova Scotia Beef Initiative to help beef producers and provincially inspected abattoirs across the province upgrade infrastructure and equipment. Agriculture Minister Greg Morrow made the announcement during meetings with cattle producers in Truro.
The government said the $1.5 million will be split between two programs administered by Perennia: the Nova Scotia Beef Finishing Equipment Support Program, which supports on-farm finishing equipment to improve feed efficiency and help producers finish more cattle in-province, and the Nova Scotia Local Beef Processing Program, which funds infrastructure and equipment upgrades for new and existing abattoirs to increase processing capacity. The government’s news release notes the commitment is $1.5 million ($750,000 for each stream).
Perennia’s program pages say applications are open, with an intake deadline of April 30, 2026. The programs are designed to address a long-standing capacity gap in Atlantic beef production by enabling more cattle to be finished and processed in Nova Scotia rather than being moved out of province for finishing or slaughter.
The move follows industry concern about tight North American beef supplies and high prices. Farm Credit Canada’s Cattle Outlook (2026) documents elevated cattle prices in 2025 and a continued strong price outlook for 2026; provincial officials say increasing local finishing and processing capacity is one way to shorten the supply chain and help mitigate local price pressures.
Industry groups have long sought more local processing capacity. The Nova Scotia Cattle Producers and other stakeholders have pressed for measures to allow more Nova Scotia-raised beef to be processed and sold locally.
Producers and processors can use the programs to apply for cost-shared support for eligible equipment and capital projects; full program details and application forms are available from Perennia. For more information and program guidelines, see Perennia’s Nova Scotia Beef Initiative page.
