The Stettler Public Library in Stettler, Alberta, is offering a free monthly Caregiver Support meeting for residents caring for loved ones with dementia, Alzheimer’s or other forms of cognitive decline. The group meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM to help caregivers share practical tips, receive emotional support and find ways to avoid burnout.
Sessions take place on the second floor of the Stettler Public Library at 6202 – 44 Avenue. Participants can drop in at 1:00 PM or call 403-742-2292 for more information. A library announcement in The Stettler Independent notes: “Take a much‑needed break to rejuvenate with others on the same journey… We’ll share tips and information to help and encourage you.” Crystal Friars, the library manager, regularly promotes the group in her Library Corner columns.
Alberta faces an aging population — roughly 16 per cent of residents are aged 65 and older — and caregivers across the province report limited access to supports. According to a regional report, more than 40 per cent of Alberta caregivers lack adequate access to resources and advice (the Stettler Independent summary cites about 43 per cent), and many in the Stettler region say they need more professional and financial help.
The group is open to anyone providing care at home who is seeking peer support. In 2024, meeting dates included May 7, June 4 and July 2; the group continues to meet monthly on the first Tuesday at 1:00 PM. All sessions are free of charge, and no registration is required; attendees can call the library at 403-742-2292 to confirm current dates and times.
