Families in Stonewall, Manitoba, can head out on the ice for free during the province’s Winter Family Fishing Weekend from February 14 to February 16, 2026. The Manitoba government announced the event to help people try the hobby at nearby spots like the Red River and Lake Winnipeg.
During these three days, residents and visitors do not need a provincial fishing licence to fish in any provincial lake or river. Vehicle entry to all provincial parks is also free until April 30, 2026, making it easier for families to plan outdoor trips over the long weekend.
For those looking for a local event, the KidFish Ice Fishing Derby is taking place on Monday, February 16, at Selkirk Park, which is about 20 to 25 minutes from Stonewall. This event raises money for children’s health and provides a way for families to experience the sport together.
While licences are not required for most areas, anyone fishing in a national park must still have a federal permit. Anglers must also follow all standard rules regarding fish size and the number of fish they are allowed to keep during the weekend.
According to Interlake Tourism, the region offers many different places to fish throughout the winter season. This annual event aims to lower the cost of outdoor activities for local residents during the Louis Riel Day long weekend.
