The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority issued a flood bulletin for Stratford, Ontario, on February 20, 2026, as water levels in local streams and the Avon River continue to rise. Residents living in low-lying areas or along the river are warned to prepare for potential localized flooding and shoreline erosion throughout the week.
The safety warning remains in effect until February 25, 2026, following a period of rain and warmer temperatures. Officials recommend that homeowners in the floodplain move valuables above floor level and stay away from riverbanks which may be unstable due to fast-moving and dangerously cold water.
To manage the surge of water, the R. Thomas Orr Dam is using an automated gate system to release water and protect nearby roads and buildings from flooding. The conservation authority is also using large reservoirs at the Wildwood, Fanshawe, and Pittock Conservation Areas to help control water levels further downstream.
While major flooding of the city centre is not currently expected, the current conditions are being monitored closely by the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority. Residents are encouraged to check for regular river-level updates and take precautions to protect their property until the water levels begin to drop.
