On March 4, 2026, a Grade 1 class from Elm Street Elementary School delivered a fresh supply of donations to the Summerside Community Fridge in Summerside, Prince Edward Island. The young students and their teachers worked together to raise money and collect groceries to help local families who are having trouble affording food.
The Summerside Community Fridge is a community project that provides free food to anyone in the public who needs it. It is housed in a small wooden building located at the corner of Granville and Foundry Streets.
This local resource has overcome several challenges in recent years, including a fire in 2023 and incidents of vandalism. It has remained open thanks to the hard work of volunteers and ongoing support from the community.
The City of Summerside also supports the initiative by providing the municipal land for the shed and the electricity needed to keep the fridges running. This partnership ensures that residents have a consistent place to find or share food with their neighbours.
By delivering the items in person, the students were able to see how their fundraising efforts directly help people in their own town. The contribution helps ensure the fridge stays stocked for those who rely on it for support.
