Residents in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, can attend a free training session on April 6, 2026, at the Summerside Rotary Library to learn practical skills for discussing and managing end-of-life care. The Last Aid Course is designed to help people feel more comfortable talking about death, dying, and grief within their own families and neighbourhoods.
The three-hour workshop is sponsored by the City of Summerside, which covers the usual $30 fee for participants. There are only three spots left for the session, which is limited to 20 people and runs from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the library located at 57 Central Street.
Organized by the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association, the program focuses on four main areas: death as a normal part of life, planning for the future, relieving suffering, and saying goodbye. The training is based on the idea that most care for people with serious illnesses happens at home with family and friends rather than with medical staff.
The course will be led by provincial palliative home care clinical development coordinator Sue Doucette and Catherine Gaudet from Hospice PEI, who were both recently honoured with the King Charles III Coronation Medal for their work in palliative care. This international program was first started in 2008 by Dr. Georg Bollig and is now taught in 21 countries around the world.
