Summerside residents are under a heat warning from Environment Canada as hot and humid weather settles over Prince County, Prince Edward Island. The warning took effect Thursday morning and lasts through Friday, with daytime highs reaching 28 C today and 29 C tomorrow and Humidex values near 36.
A Yellow Heat Warning is in effect, marking a moderate risk level. Environment Canada says extreme heat can affect anyone and urges people to take precautions. Older adults, young children, and those with chronic health conditions are especially vulnerable.
People are advised to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, and check on neighbours and family members who may need help. Signs of heat exhaustion include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine, and intense fatigue. Heat stroke is a medical emergency with red and hot skin, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and a change in consciousness.
Relief is on the way. Temperatures are expected to drop back to more typical values around 26 C starting Saturday. The heat warning follows a trend of warmer summers on the Island. Summerside broke a daily temperature record last August when the mercury hit 32.8 C, surpassing a high set back in 1945.
Long-term care homes in the province have faced challenges keeping residents cool during heat waves. The province has been working to install permanent air conditioning at facilities including Summerset Manor in Summerside, but delays due to contractor availability have slowed progress.
