The Government of Prince Edward Island is offering new financial rewards to attract more French-language teachers to provincial classrooms, including schools in Summerside. On February 23, 2026, officials announced an initiative to lower education costs for students and encourage graduates to take positions across the Island. The program aims to fill critical staffing gaps to provide families with more consistent access to French-immersion and French-first language classes.

Starting with the May 2026 cohort, the province will provide a $2,000 tuition credit for students entering the Bachelor of Education (Français langue seconde) program at the University of Prince Edward Island. This credit is available to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. The initiative is supported by $151,609 in funding from the federal department of Canadian Heritage.

Graduates who finish their training and accept teaching positions on the Island can also receive a $3,000 signing bonus. To qualify, new teachers must work for either the Public Schools Branch or La Commission scolaire de langue française. This bonus is intended to retain qualified educators within the provincial school system after they complete their degrees.

The Department of Education and Early Years, which is headquartered at the Holman Centre in Summerside, is working with the Department of Workforce and Advanced Learning to manage these incentives. Local schools like École-sur-Mer and Elm Street Elementary have seen a high demand for French education recently, and officials hope these bonuses will ensure students have the teachers they need without the disruptions caused by empty positions.
