The City of Summerside, Prince Edward Island, has awarded an $11.5-million contract to build a new fire station on Central Street to improve emergency services. Local company Fitzgerald & Snow will build the new facility next to Leger Park and across from Athena Consolidated School.
Construction will begin in 2026 and is expected to take about 18 months to complete. This project has been in the works for over 15 years and is designed to handle the needs of the city’s growing population and improve response times.
The new station replaces a building on Foundry Street that was built in 1962 and is no longer safe for use. That older facility has faced several problems, including the presence of asbestos and a basement that had to be closed off entirely due to its poor condition.
The updated building will feature four bays for fire trucks, a decontamination area to keep staff safe, and overnight sleeping quarters. It will also include specialized training tools, such as a ladder rapelling wall, to help firefighters practice their skills locally.
