Starting March 8, 2026, the provincial government is putting weight limits on many roads in Summerside and across Prince Edward Island to prevent damage during the spring thaw. The Department of Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy announced these annual restrictions are now in effect to keep heavy vehicles from breaking up soft road surfaces.
These rules started at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday and mean that heavy trucks must carry lighter loads on any street not labeled as an all-weather highway. According to the Government of Prince Edward Island, no special permits for overweight loads will be handed out while the ground is thawing.
Officials say that enforcement will be increased to make sure commercial drivers, farmers, and heavy equipment operators are following the new rules. People who drive vehicles that are too heavy for the roads could face fines that reach several thousand dollars.
These limits are a regular part of spring and are meant to stop the ground from getting soft and creating deep ruts or potholes. Residents might see some traffic changes or delays as large trucks move to different routes or make more trips with smaller loads.
