This recent work marks the second time in less than three weeks that this specific stretch of road has been shut down for repairs. On March 16, 2026, the City of Summerside closed the same segment from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM to address emergency issues with the local sewer system.
The repeated closures highlight ongoing challenges with aging municipal infrastructure. According to the City of Summerside, some of the water and sewer systems in the area are over 100 years old, which often leads to unexpected breaks and a need for frequent maintenance.
To address these concerns, the city council recently unveiled its 2026-27 budget, which features $26.7 million in capital investments aimed at renewing city infrastructure. This funding plan includes a dedicated $3.2 million for water and sewer system improvements.
Harvard Street, which is located in Summerside, remains a focus for the city’s Public Works Division as they work to replace failing components of the historic utility network.
