The Prince Edward Island Fishermen’s Association is looking for three experienced boat captains to help with a spring herring research project on Prince Edward Island. This study, run by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, uses experimental nets to gather important information on fish populations.
Captains have until 4:30 p.m. on March 10, 2026, to register for the project. To qualify, applicants must show proof that they have fished at least three full spring seasons in the region within the last 20 years.
The project is looking for one captain to work on the south side of the island and two captains for the north side. This is the final year of the current research contract with the federal government, and the rules for the study cannot be changed during this time.
Local fishing associations have asked for the commercial herring fishery to be reopened because more fish have been spotted in the area recently. The data collected by these captains will be used to help officials decide if it is safe to return to regular commercial fishing operations in the future.
