The City of Summerside, Prince Edward Island, issued a warning on March 11, 2026, about potholes and frost heaves appearing on local streets. These road hazards are being caused by the current freeze-thaw weather cycles, where moisture enters road cracks, expands as it freezes, and then melts. This process can quickly damage the pavement and create dangerous driving conditions across the community.

Drivers are encouraged to change how they drive by slowing down, scanning for holes, and leaving more space between cars to avoid vehicle damage. To help manage these conditions, the Public Works Division is using temporary cold-patch materials to fill holes. These quick fixes will be used to keep roads safe until permanent paving can begin during the warmer spring construction season.

Residents who see a dangerous pothole while traveling on city streets can report the location to road crews by calling 902-432-1268. According to the Government of Prince Edward Island, these temporary repairs are standard practice for maintaining the province’s roads during the late winter. Reporting hazards helps crews prioritize which areas need immediate attention to prevent accidents.
