On February 17, 2026, the Summerside Fire Department responded to a house fire in the Hillcrest neighbourhood and a water-related police operation. A general alarm was issued at 6:54 PM, with all fire engines dispatched to the home in Hillcrest.
Firefighters determined the blaze was an accidental stovetop fire. The department reported the fire was quickly contained and that no serious injuries were reported during the incident.
While crews were at the house fire, the department also deployed its rescue boat and a utility truck to assist the Royal Canadian Mounted Police with an operation on the water. This multi-agency response highlighted the department’s role in supporting provincial law enforcement.
These emergency responses come as the City of Summerside moves forward with building a new $11.5 million fire station on Central Street. The construction contract for the facility, which will replace the aging Station 1 and accommodate four fire trucks, was awarded to Fitzgerald and Snow.
Fire Chief Ron Enman said the new station will replace a building that has served the community for over 60 years but is no longer large enough for modern tools and training needs. The department is also reminding residents to check their smoke alarms and follow safety protocols around water during the winter months.
