The Summerside Fire Department is hosting its annual boot drive fundraiser today, April 4, 2026, at the Atlantic Superstore on 535 Granville Street. From 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, members of the department will be on-site to collect donations to support Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
This event, which returns to its traditional timing on Easter Saturday, is a long-standing tradition for the department. Safety Officer Wally MacAusland has helped lead the organizing efforts for the fundraiser, which typically brings in approximately $4,500. All money collected during the drive will stay in Prince Edward Island to assist local families.
Under the direction of Fire Chief Ron Enman, the Summerside Fire Department and its 58 personnel participate in this national initiative, which began in 1954. The partnership started when Dr. David Green, who co-founded the organization, sought help from fire fighters to fund research for his son and others living with neuromuscular disorders.
Since that time, more than 600 fire departments across the country have participated in the movement, helping to raise over $103 million. These donations help provide essential equipment for individuals of all ages, including wheelchairs, hospital beds, leg braces, walkers, and respirators, while also supporting research, advocacy, and community services.
