On February 25, 2026, a 51-year-old man from Elmsdale was arrested in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, after being caught driving nearly double the speed limit. The driver was clocked at 189 kilometres per hour in a 100 zone during a coordinated effort by local police agencies.
Corporal Jamie Parsons of the PEI RCMP first saw the vehicle on Route 2 in Cascumpec driving 147 kilometres per hour in a 90 zone. The driver was later recorded by another officer going 189 kilometres per hour in a 100 zone.
Police tried to stop the car twice, but the driver fled both times. To keep other people on the road safe, officers did not chase the vehicle and instead shared the information with Summerside Police Services, who found and arrested the man later that night.
The man has been charged with running from the police and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. The arrest comes as new provincial laws take effect on February 27, 2026, which increase the maximum fine for extreme speeding to $1,900.
