Residents in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, can now access the city’s full spending plan for the 2026-27 fiscal year online. The City of Summerside has published its annual budget as a downloadable document, detailing how tax dollars will be distributed across local services and infrastructure projects.
The city’s 2026-27 budget is a balanced financial plan totaling $82.8 million. While the city has maintained property tax rates at their current levels, residents will see a change in utility costs, as water and sewer rates are increasing by approximately 6 percent.
A major focus of this year’s plan is the $26.7 million allocated for capital investments. These funds are set aside to maintain and renew municipal infrastructure, including $9.2 million for technical services such as water and sewer system upgrades and the completion of the East-West Corridor. Additionally, the city has set aside $6.28 million for emergency services, which includes $5.5 million for the construction of a new firehall.
The city is also dedicating funds to community quality-of-life projects. This includes $677,000 for new playground infrastructure, such as a splash pad at Lefurgey Park, and $173,000 for improvements like basketball court repairs and a new dog park on Northumberland Street. Furthermore, the Summerside Police Service will receive a $400,000 increase to hire one additional officer, aiming to reach a total of 39 officers by April 2027.
General revenue to support these programs is expected to come from several sources, including $14.7 million in municipal funding, $12.6 million from property taxes, and $3.8 million projected from the sale of wind energy. The complete budget document is now available for review by the public on the city website.
