Residents in Summerside are facing a week of unsettled spring weather, with a mix of rain showers expected through Friday followed by a risk of frost this weekend.
According to Environment Canada, rain will taper off early Wednesday morning, leaving cloudy conditions with a chance of showers or drizzle through the end of the work week. Daily highs are expected to reach approximately 7°C as a stationary weather front moves across the Maritimes.
The weather is forecast to clear by Saturday, but this shift brings an overnight temperature drop to -1°C. Because the average date for the final spring frost in Summerside is May 13, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, local gardeners are encouraged to take protective measures for sensitive plants and outdoor gardens during the weekend.
While some hardier annual flowers such as pansies, petunias, begonias, bacopas, and geraniums can tolerate light frost, others may require covering or indoor shelter. Kool Breeze Farms notes that many of these annual varieties are currently available for planting, but gardeners should remain mindful of the fluctuating temperatures.
Sunday is expected to be the warmest day of the week, with temperatures reaching 12°C. The break in the weather will be short-lived, however, as more showers are predicted to arrive on Monday.
