The Harbourfront Theatre in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a summer lineup packed with some of the Island’s most beloved musicians. The milestone season features performances by fiddling legends, singer-songwriters, and folk ensembles that highlight the depth of local talent that has graced its stage over three decades.
The 520-seat venue, which first opened as the Harbourfront Jubilee Theatre on July 10, 1996, has become a cultural anchor for Summerside. Executive Director Mary Dennis, who started working front of house when the curtains first rose, says the anniversary is about celebrating community. “There was a whole group of people, for about 10 years, a group of dedicated Summerside citizens that had a vision for a performing arts theatre nestled in the heart of the waterfront,” Dennis said.
The summer schedule is anchored by a series of high-profile Island acts. Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy, the Cape Breton and Ontario fiddling duo, will perform with their seven children in a family show that showcases their award-winning Celtic sound. Fiddler Richard Wood brings his career retrospective, ‘Through the Years,’ to the stage on August 7, featuring original bandmates and dance performers in a journey through his decades of music.
Juno Award-winning singer-songwriter Catherine MacLellan returns with her tribute show, ‘The Songs of Gene MacLellan,’ with performances on July 28 and 29 and August 25 and 26. The production honours her late father’s songwriting legacy. Lennie Gallant’s multimedia spectacle, ‘Searching for Abegweit: The Island Songs & Stories of Lennie Gallant,’ returns for four shows between July 12 and August 12, blending music, storytelling, and visuals that celebrate PEI culture.
A one-night-only celebration on August 18 at 8 p.m. unites the Ellis Family Band and Fiddlers’ Sons for a Summerside homecoming. This joint performance highlights the theatre’s commitment to showcasing homegrown talent that resonates with local audiences.
The theatre opened as the Harbourfront Jubilee Theatre, a name it carried until a rebranding in 2007. The vision was driven by a decade of planning and fundraising by Summerside residents, with major support from the Wyatt Foundation. Established by Dr. Wanda Wyatt in 1966, the foundation contributed $1 million to make the project a reality. The theatre continues to be a cornerstone of the community, earning the Cavendish Farms Community Impact Award in 2024 from the Greater Summerside Chamber of Commerce.
