Swan River, Manitoba, is facing life‑threatening winter weather after Environment and Climate Change Canada observations showed wind chill readings near −50°C early Monday morning, January 26, 2026. The extreme cold moved in late Sunday night and persisted through the morning, creating conditions in which frostbite can occur on exposed skin in minutes.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Swan River station, air temperatures fell into the mid‑30s below zero. Those values meet the federal agency’s criteria for dangerous cold and triggered an Extreme Cold Warning for the area.

The Swan Valley School Division cancelled rural bus service for the day. The division’s weather‑related transportation procedure states that buses do not run when wind chill is −45°C or colder at 6:00 a.m., a threshold intended to reduce the risk of buses breaking down or students becoming stranded in rural areas.

Provincial public‑health advisories are reminding residents to watch for signs of cold‑related illness — including shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain or weakness, and numbness or colour change in the fingers and toes — and to limit time outdoors. Environment Canada forecasts and local reports indicate the deep freeze is likely to last through mid‑week, which may also slow work in local farming and timber operations.
