The Town of Sylvan Lake, Alberta, has launched a $3 million infrastructure initiative to drill three new wells and upgrade an existing one, supported by a $923,000 provincial grant. Pre-construction work on the Northeast Gateway Water Main began on February 23, 2026, to help the town keep up with its fast-growing population and ensure long-term water reliability.
This project will boost the town’s water capacity to support 30,000 residents, a significant increase from the current limit of 18,000 people. The $923,000 grant was provided by the Province of Alberta through the Alberta Municipal Water/Wastewater Partnership to help cover 30 per cent of the expansion costs. By increasing the supply now, the town is preparing for a population that is expected to outgrow the current system within the next five years.
The new wells will be located in Red Deer County near the Summer Village of Jarvis Bay and will feed into the town’s North Reservoir. Town utilities are managing the work alongside ISL Engineering and Land Services, the contractor hired to oversee the drilling and testing. This location was chosen following extensive surveys to protect the local groundwater source while meeting the growing needs of the town.
Officials are moving forward with the expansion to stay ahead of rapid local growth and to ensure the community has the infrastructure needed for the future. The project ensures that as more people move to the area, the water system will remain dependable and capable of meeting daily demands.
