The Sylvan Lake Fire Department has responded to 86 emergency calls in the first eight weeks of 2026, as the town manages a significant long-term increase in service requests in Sylvan Lake, Alberta. Between January 1 and February 26, 2026, the department’s team of three full-time chiefs and 30 paid-on-call firefighters covered a wide service area of 466 square kilometres. This response zone includes the town, parts of Red Deer and Lacombe Counties, and four summer villages.

Since 2021, the number of annual calls has jumped by 58 per cent, growing from 421 to 665 total responses in 2025. According to data from the Town of Sylvan Lake, about 90 per cent of the alarm calls the department attends are actually false alarms. This high volume of calls puts extra pressure on equipment and the local responders who handle the emergencies.

To help manage the workload, the town council approved a 2026 budget that includes buying a new fire squad vehicle to replace an older one. On February 5, 2026, the town also approved money for station renovations to help with staffing challenges and create a better working environment for the crew. These investments are intended to improve response efficiency across the large area the department serves.

The busy start to the year follows a period of steady growth for the fire service. The department continues to operate with a focus on community safety while honouring the memory of Firefighter J. Manson, who died in the line of duty on January 16, 2023.
